Dark Dunes on Mars – Horizontally Compressed View

Namib Dune · Bagnold Dune Field · Gale Crater

This transmission captures the **Namib Dune**, part of the **Bagnold Dune Field** inside Gale Crater. The image has been **horizontally compressed** to provide broader context, revealing a dramatic landscape of **dark sand ripples**, **light orange slopes**, and a **rock-strewn horizon**. These dunes are not static—they are **active**, shifting over time under the influence of Martian wind.

Curiosity’s close-up investigation of Namib marked the **first time an active sand dune was studied up close on another planet**. The rover analyzed grain size, layering, and composition using Mastcam and ChemCam instruments. What it found was extraordinary: **ripple patterns similar to Earth’s**, but with **larger peaks averaging 3 meters apart**—a structure seen only in underwater dunes on Earth. This suggests that **Mars’ thin atmosphere and sand dynamics** create ripple formations unlike anything found in terrestrial deserts.

Gale Crater was once a **lake-filled basin**, and the surrounding terrain holds clues to Mars’ ancient climate. The Bagnold Dunes are composed of **dark basaltic sand**, shaped by aeolian processes. Curiosity’s findings help scientists understand how **wind erosion and sediment transport** differ between Earth and Mars. These dunes are mobile, and their movement is being tracked over time to study **surface activity and habitability potential**.
