Methane on Mars – A Signal from Below?

Curiosity Rover · In-Situ Detection · 4K Resolution

Watch the full breakdown of this historic methane detection event.

In a groundbreaking moment for planetary science, NASA’s Curiosity Rover made the **first in-situ detection of methane fluctuations** directly from the surface of Mars. While methane had previously been observed from orbit, this was the first time a rover measured **rapid spikes and drops in methane concentration**—a potential biosignature—right from Gale Crater.

Methane is a molecule that on Earth is largely produced by **biological activity**, though it can also arise from geological processes. What makes this Martian detection so compelling is the **episodic nature** of the methane spikes—suggesting an active source, possibly from **subsurface reservoirs or microbial life**. The largest spike recorded by Curiosity reached **10 parts per billion**, a significant jump from background levels.

The detection occurred in **Gale Crater**, a region shaped by ancient lakes and sedimentary layering. Curiosity’s onboard Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument sniffed the air and confirmed the presence of methane during nighttime sampling, when atmospheric mixing is minimal. This timing hints at a **localized release**, possibly from underground fractures or seasonal thawing.

NASA has yet to confirm the source, but the implications are profound. If the methane is biological, it could mean **life still exists beneath the Martian surface**. If geological, it still points to **active subsurface chemistry**, which could support life. Either way, this event marks a turning point in the search for Martian life—and Mars Alive is here to document it.
