This anomaly from Sol 991 captures what appears to be a humanoid figure standing upright on the Martian surface. The form is striking—head, torso, and a raised arm that seems to be waving toward the rover. The gesture feels intentional, almost communicative. The shadowing and terrain contrast reinforce the figure’s separation from the background, making it stand out as more than just a random rock. Whether illusion, artifact, or encounter, this one feels personal—like Mars responding to our presence.

What makes this image even more compelling is that it doesn’t stand alone. In the same Sol 991 capture, there appear to be **multiple humanoid forms**—each with distinct posture, proportions, and orientation. Some seem embedded in the terrain, others partially obscured by shadow. The diversity of shapes suggests more than coincidence. This Sol may be one of the richest anomaly fields Curiosity has ever recorded.

Captured during Curiosity’s approach to the Marias Pass region in Gale Crater, this area is composed of finely layered sandstone and mudstone, shaped by ancient water flows and wind erosion. The rover was conducting multispectral imaging and elemental analysis, targeting contact zones between different sedimentary units. The terrain here is fractured, sloped, and geochemically diverse—ideal for preserving unusual formations and shadow illusions. But this anomaly defies simple geological explanation.
