Mars Mawrth Vallis Fly-Over – Where Water Once Flowed

Mawrth Vallis · Mars Express Orbiter · ESA/DLR/FU Berlin

This cinematic flyover reveals the ancient outflow channel known as Mawrth Vallis—stretching 373 miles (600 km) long and plunging 1.2 miles (2 km) deep. Once carved by liquid water, this region is rich in clay minerals and has long been considered a prime candidate for future landings, including the ExoMars 2020 mission.

The animation was created using high-resolution imagery from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter—the same platform used to visualize the terrain of the so-called “Martian Atlantis.” The result is a sweeping aerial view of a landscape shaped by time, erosion, and possibly life.
