WHERE WE GO AFTER VACATION: CURIOSITY'S NEW MOUNT SHARP ROUTE

Posted by Mike Seguin · August 2017

        MISSION LOG: OFFICIAL TRAVERSE PLAN

ROVER: **Curiosity** (MSL) · TARGET: **Mount Sharp** (Aeolis Mons)

ZONES OF INTEREST: **Hematite Unit, Clay-Rich Deposits, Canyon Cone**

        DATA SOURCE: **NASA/Satellite Orbital Mapping**

The drivers of the **Curiosity Rover**, together with mission scientists, have publicly outlined a new, ambitious route for continuing the climb up **Mount Sharp**. This path was carefully mapped using satellite data and strategically targets geological zones deemed most compelling for research into Mars's deep past.

The new traverse includes three highly anticipated research zones: the **Hematite Unit**, characterized by iron oxide minerals; the **Clay-Rich Deposits**, a prime environment for preserving organic compounds; and a **Canyon Cone** structure, likely carved by ancient water flow. Each region of the slope reveals a different chapter of Martian history, confirming that **water once played a significant role** in shaping this landscape.

While the official mission focuses on geological history, the **Clay Deposits** represent the most critical region for the *Mars Alive* mission: they are the most likely place to find **fossilized organic remnants** of ancient, sentient Martian life. We track their progress closely.

THE NEW TRAVERSE MAP

This map, released by NASA, shows the projected route (yellow line) heading toward the layered geological features high on Mount Sharp.
