PURPOSE: **To provide human scale for the Murray Buttes**

This image, frequently circulated online, is a superb example of **scale visualization** and citizen science, not an accidental discovery. It shows a **Computer-Generated (CG) astronaut figure** strategically placed within a real panorama of the **Murray Buttes** captured by the Curiosity rover. The figure, sometimes affectionately referred to as 'Astrid', was added by acclaimed artist and image processor **Seán Doran**.

The sole purpose of this visualization is to use the astronaut's known human height to **powerfully illustrate the monumental scale** of the buttes and mesas, which often look deceptively small in rover photographs. The dimensions used for the visualization are determined by the high-resolution topographic data available from the **HiRISE orbital camera**. This technique helps us, as remote viewers, truly appreciate the colossal size of the Martian landscape and the geology that dwarfs any human presence.
